Selecting the right blind

Blinds terminology

The window covering industry uses some terms that may not be immediately understood. Window blinds come in many varieties, however the three most common can be categorized.

1. Venetian Blinds
2. Roller Blinds
3. Roman Blinds

Venetian Blinds

Venetian Blinds can be made from three different types of materials.

1. Aluminum mini blinds (also known by the name Mini Blinds),
2. Wood
3. Ecowood blinds (also called faux-wood blinds, ecowood or PVC).

Aluminium Venetian Blinds

Kitchens, offices and bathrooms are all common places to find Aluminium Venetian blinds. Aluminium Venetian Blinds come with 25mm slats almost exclusively. It is because the Aluminium slats are flexible. Aluminium Venetian Blinds may also be known as Mini Blinds.

The aluminium Venetian Blinds offer a cost-effective way to decorate a window. They are usually available in white or silver, but they come in other colors to suit the decor of any home or business.

Wooden Venetian Blinds

They are an elegant way to decorate your interior and conceal windows. Most commonly, they come in 50mm but also 25mm. Although other sizes of slats are available, they are rarely used.

Many wooden blinds can be made from basswood, a light wood. However, they are also available in oriental hardwoods or bamboo. Due to its durability, basswood warps far less than any other type of wood over time. For large windows, wooden venetian blinds work well. They are also suitable for many windows around the house. Only avoid areas where the air is moist, such as bathrooms. Woods of all colours, including cedar (light), cherry (mid-coloured) and mahogany (darker), are the most popular. Ecowood Venetian Blinds

Ecowood Venetians Blinds, which are very popular today, are typically made out of PVC and plastic composites. However they may also contain some wood. The blinds have become very popular, mainly because they’re durable and easy-to-clean. They also don’t discolor or warp like wooden blinds. As they are not easily warped, these blinds can be used in areas where moisture may be present. Ecowood Venetian Blinds come in a variety of colours, but the most popular is usually white.

Roller Blinds

Window coverings, roller blinds open by rolling them up onto a cylinder which runs over a window. Roller Blinds consist of 100% polyester. The two most common types of Roller Blinds available are Sunscreen and Blockout. As the name implies, Sunscreen Roller Blinds will allow some light into the room through the fabric.

Since they’re also inexpensive, Roller Blinds remain popular. Roller Blinds are available in many colours and with their rolling mechanism, they last for years.
